THIS STORY EATS

There was a gun hidden in a cereal box on top of the fridge, behind the old
paper plates and miscellaneous baskets and jars. It was there because the
child’s mother purchased it a couple weeks ago because of something that
happened a couple years ago. The police report states that the father was hit
over the head with a blunt object. Eventually the mother called 9-1-1, after he
didn’t wake up for several minutes. There was internal bleeding, and the father
was in the hospital for nearly a month. She claimed that the father had been
violent, physically and mentally, although the police report did not include
evidence of these accusations. Then about a month ago, the mother started
noticing things had been moved around their new apartment. Strange things
arrived in her mailbox. She bought the gun from one of her former dealers. The
child was playing with the neighbor’s kid. When the girl complained that she was
hungry, the neighbor boy thought he could make her a bowl of cereal. The mother
was not home. Both kids forgot about the cereal when they found the gun. The
girl became jealous, and a struggle ensued. The neighbors reported hearing two
loud pops. The girl’s mother held the limp body of the young boy. At the sound
of her wails and cries for help, a neighbor finally stopped by. Horrified by the
scene, she immediately called the cops. The child died right then and there, in
the mother’s arms. The girl had gone missing. She was gone for weeks. The girl
was found sleeping behind a boulder, unharmed. The mother was sentenced to a
decade in prison for criminal negligence. The girl was sent to foster care after
the last surviving grandparent died of lung cancer.
